What political tribe do you belong to?

Welcome!

People have long organized themselves into clans and tribes. These are valuable forms of social organization. We are not talking about this kind of tribalism.

We are talking about the current phenomenon of political tribalism. It refers to the degradation of a body of citizens who split into opposing camps and can no longer pursue political goals together. Long known as factionalism, it is exacerbated in modern times by mass media, propaganda, and “information bubbles.”

We designed this form to see which fork in the road you would take if you were tempted or compelled to join a political tribe.

We will introduce over twenty ways we define ourselves culturally, one by one. We will give you a choice of two self-descriptions that mark opposing poles of a healthy political dialogue. Beyond these poles lies extremism and the degradation into political tribalism.

You will probably want to describe yourself differently or with more nuance. You will want to qualify or justify your choices. This form does not let you. We force you to stereotype yourself. Sorry. (We have our reasons...so please bear with us.)

If you do not identify with either description, please select the characterization of yourself that you object to the least.

Enjoy!
